My father's best friend broke my heart.
Now I'm back to break his resolve
.

I offered myself to Hayden the night before I left for college.
He rejected me.
Called me too innocent. Too forbidden.
Said he was too filthy.
But not before he kissed me like he was dying for me.
Four years later, I'm back with a plan to prove I can handle his darkness.
But I underestimated how hot he burns for me.
What boundaries he's willing to cross to claim me.
And when his control finally snaps, he'll make sure I never forget who I belong to.

💍 Inside Seducing the Bride 💍

I escape to the kitchen, volunteering for dishes just to collect myself. It isn’t working. My hands tremble as I rinse plates. I’m dizzy. Hot. And it’s not the Phoenix heat.

It’s Hayden.

What if he discovers my secret?

“Perrie.”

Speak of the devil.

As he saunters into the kitchen, his deep voice slides like warm honey down my spine and makes my heart thump against my ribs. I swallow hard and try to steady myself.

“Hayden.” I don’t dare look at him, but I feel his stare on me like a physical touch, raising goose bumps all over my body. “What’s up?”

He takes my left hand—and my breath catches. That simple contact, his callused fingers against my skin, shoots electricity up my arm. He stares at my “engagement ring” with barely disguised rage.

Hayden’s jaw tightens as his voice drops, lethal and low. “I saw Derek kiss you earlier.”

My stomach clenches. It was a peck—brief. Chaste. Derek has played his role perfectly.

“He’s my fiancé. That’s what couples do.”

With a growl, Hayden turns me to face him, pins me against the sink, and stares at me intently with those impossibly blue eyes. I can’t help but squirm. “He’s fooling himself if he thinks you’re his.”

“Don’t make a scene.”

“Then stop letting him put his hands on what’s mine.” He leans closer, his breath fanning hot against my cheek.

“I’m not yours,” I protest, hating how breathless I sound. “I never was.”

The lie tastes bitter on my tongue. We both know the truth—I’ve been Hayden’s since that night four years ago. Maybe even before.

His lips quirk into a knowing smile that does dangerous things to my insides. “You were—as soon as you kissed me, sweet pea. The second you offered me that token and begged me to ruin you.”

His possessive growl turns my knees weak. “Hayden…”

“Tell me what you’re doing,” he demands.

I play dumb. It’s my only hope to avoid the confrontation he’s clearly itching for. “What does it look like? I’m doing the dishes.”

“You’re intentionally misunderstanding me. You’ve known this guy for three months.

What’s your rush? I know you, sweet pea. You’re not impulsive.”

The nickname hits me like a punch to the chest. The way he says it, low and intimate. My resolve wavers, but I force myself to remember why I’ve come home.

“I appreciate your concern, but everything is great.”

Scowling, he leans closer, nearly forcing me to bend back over the sink. The scent of him—sandalwood and something uniquely Hayden—fills my senses, making my knees wobble.

“You think that script is going to work with me? It makes Dan and his daddy-guilt feel better to believe you, but I’m going to be a tougher sell. Do you actually love him? He doesn’t seem like your type.”

God, Hayden is more direct than I remember. Or maybe it’s just that I forgot how intent he can be, and how it feels to be his sole focus—like being caught in a spotlight I can’t escape.

I reach for the dirty pans, desperate for something to do with my hands. “Pass me the dish soap, please.”

With a growl, Hayden reaches around me to turn off the faucet. Then he grabs my shoulders, his thumbs pressing into the hollows near my collarbone. The heat of his palms bleeds through my thin shirt, branding me. “The fucking dishes will wait until we’ve talked.”

He’s too close. I can’t take it. Every inch of skin where he touches me burns, awakening memories of that night—the way his hands felt on me as he claimed me with his kiss. My body remembers, even if I’ve spent years trying to forget.

“You don’t get to do this,” I hurl at him. “I gave you an opportunity—”

“You were too young.” His voice drops, rougher now.

“That didn’t make what I felt any less real. But if you think you can swoop in four years later and take me up on my stupid offer now that I’m ‘old enough,’ you’re sorely mistaken.” The words come out sharper than I intended, edged with the pain of rejection that never fully healed.

“Does he make you happy?”

The question throws me, its simplicity cutting through my defenses. I look away, unable to meet his eyes.

“You don’t understand.” My voice comes out weaker than I want it to.

“Maybe you don’t,” he argues as he advances again, clutching the counter on either side of me and caging me in.

My entire body leaps and jolts. I swallow, trying to calm my galloping heart as I look for an escape. But he’s left me none. The heat in the kitchen is nothing compared to Hayden pressed against me. “Leave it alone.”

He goes on as if I didn’t push back. “You deserve a man who worships you. I’ve seen nothing that makes me believe that’s him.”

For a brief, dangerous moment, I imagine Hayden being that man. How it would feel to have him look at me every day with pride and love, to have his eyes darken with desire as he tumbles me into our bed every night.

“Well, since that’s not you, it’s none of your business.” But even as I say it, my eyes betray me, falling to his oh-so-close mouth for a fraction of a second.

“What if I make it my business?”

My thundering heart comes to a crashing stop. Every carefully laid plan suddenly feels as if it’s unraveling. “What does that mean?”

“I think you still have feelings for me. And you know what? I’ll come clean. I wanted you back then, too. That hot-as-fuck kiss has haunted me since you left, and if you’d had any idea how close I was to tossing you on your bed and being the first—and last—man inside you, it would have scared the hell out of you.”

His words paint vivid images in my mind—images I’ve fantasized about a thousand times in my darkest, most private moments. Instantly, my body responds, a rush of heat spreading low in my belly, my breasts suddenly heavy and sensitive. I press my thighs together, fighting the ache building there.

I cross my arms to hide my trembling. “Why tell me now? It’s too late.”
“Because I don’t think you and I are through.”
