āWhat makes you think Iām watching you that closely?ā
The bastard is patronizing me. āBecause I donāt think anything escapes your notice.ā
āSmart, resourceful, and efficient. You passedā¦for now. Pull up a chair, and weāll begin the interview.ā
I glance around. The one chair in the room is too big for me to lug. If I sat there, Iād have my back to him. His smug expression tells me that he not only knows this, but he wants to see how Iāll react.
None of this would bother me if I wasnāt attracted to him. If my rebellious gaze wasnāt stupidly stuck on his mesmerizing gray eyes. If I didnāt admire his strong, square jaw. If I didnāt want to know what a kiss from his fleshy slash of a mouth is like. If I didnāt feel drawn to touch his steely shoulders and sink against his wide chestā¦
But Iām here for an interview, not a hookup. I need a chair, and I suspect Chad Force is waiting on me to think outside the box.
āIāll be right back.ā
His smile as I exit and turn the corner tells me I made the right choice in not whining about the lack of a seat or wasting his time by asking where to find one. Iām following directions while solving the problem. But thereās something predatory in his smile, like heās enjoying watching me jump through hoops. I should be annoyed. Unfortunately, my body has other ideasā¦
I tiptoe down a floor and venture up the hall. I find a stylish, entirely masculine home office. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in black dominate an entire wall of the space, built around a matching modular desk, accented by sleek pulls. A giant iMac sits in the alcove. Behind it sits a tufted chair in a shade of blue that reminds me of a rainy day. Itās big and it will be hell to lug, but itās on wheels.
Not indulging the fear that Iām somehow desecrating Mr. Forceās personal space, I roll the office chair down the hall, grunt as I lift it up the stairs, then drag it behind me back into the manās bedroom.
āYou found it, I see.ā
I position it a few feet from the bed, sit, then cross my legs. āOf course.ā
āItās heavy.ā
āBut not unmanageable.ā
āYou carried it up alone.ā
I eye him. Why is he stating the obvious? Probably to shove me down some conversational rabbit hole he wants me to fall into. āIām not easily deterred.ā
His smile creeps a little higher. āYou didnāt ask permission.ā
āThatās one way of looking at it. But I also solved a simple problem on my own. I see no reason to disturb people, especially busy ones, when I can handle something myself.ā
His raised brow tells me heās impressed, but he wonāt give me the satisfaction of admitting that out loud. This is some kind of game to him, and it frustrates me. He collects information while revealing nothing, and every answer I give is ammunition he stores for later use. Apparently, heās amused, while I need to eat and find a place to sleep.
āTell me about you,ā he begins, glancing at the sheet of paper in his hands. āAnd donāt recite your rĆ©sumĆ©. Iāve already read it. It doesnāt tell me what I really need to know.ā
I wonder what heās after, but nothing in his face gives away his thoughts. āI love the financial world because Iām addicted to puzzles and I strive every day to understand what really makes the world turn.ā
His smile tells me he likes my answer. āGo on.ā
āSchool was a way of gathering fundamental information so I could get my foot in the door, but bottom line? I believe that working at Force Financial could genuinely teach me what I need to know to excel.ā
āI have no doubt of that, but whatās in it for me?ā
The primary rule of any sales pitch: Tell the customer why you can be the answer to their problems. I canāt really answer that without more information.
āWhy are you looking for a new assistant?ā
āBecause my last one quit.ā
āAny particular reason?ā
āApparently, Iām a workaholic bastard. Who knew?ā
āWell, I have no interest in bars, parties, mobile games, or whatever the rest of my peers are into since Iām a workaholic, too. Iām assuming youād prefer someone like that at your side.ā
āYes, but thatās not all I need in an assistant.ā
I try not to squirm in my seat. If heās looking for sex, I know itās not smart, but Iām leaning toward sign me up. On the other hand, Iām pretty sure he wouldnāt risk his billion-dollar-plus empire for a piece of ass and a sexual harassment suit.
āYou require other qualities.ā
āYes.ā
And heās not going to tell me what they are. āYou want me to figure them out.ā
āAstute of you.ā He looks pleased.
I need to keep pushing forward until I find out what he wants in an assistant. So far, he likes the fact that Iām persistent and dedicated, I problem solve, and I have gumption. If he didnāt, Iād already be gone. But thereās something more. I need to figure it out.
āTell me about the duties this job entails. Iāll be better able to explain how I can help.ā
His crafty stare hints that heās plotting something. āLetās do this. Rather than waste time on trite questions and answers, Iāll give you an opportunity to actually prove your worth. A test drive, if you will. If you last forty-eight hours, youāre hired.ā
āItās that simple?ā
He laughs. āYou wonāt find it simple.ā
āAre you going to be difficult on purpose?ā
āNo." His grin is ruthless. "But Iāll be myself.ā
š Accept the offer āif you think you can handle him.Ā
